'Ich hab' vs 'Ich habe'

it happens in every language, that you swallow letters when you talk fast. It's like when you say "I'm gonna" instead of "I am going to", which is much longer and thus takes you more time and effort to say it. Or even if you'd (you would. Do you see? You're (again!) doing this in English all the time, too) translated the German example into English: I have -> I've. And every speaker is lazy, no matter which language.

"Ich habe" is the correct form though and you should definitely use it when you're writing, if you use "ich hab" it's incorrect. But when you're speaking it's alright.

I live in the southwest of Germany and here it is actually more common to say "ich hab" instead of "ich habe". Even our German teacher uses it all the time. Nobody here thinks it's wrong. But the verb "haben" isn't the only one, many regular verbs undergo the same change. "Ich gehe" becomes "Ich geh", "Ich suche" becomes "Ich such" etc.
